Hopefully this newsletter finds you in good health!
Several MD’s, Nutrition Professionals, and Health Coaches have reached out after my talk at the ‘Functional Medicine Congress’ that I gave virtually in German. They asked me for more information, or if I could support with German- speaking workshops. Right now, I am focused on different topics, adding to my own studying about the newest research of the Microbiome. I am sorry about that. So, I decided to share my
newest handout on Candida, an overgrowth of Yeast in the Gut.
The FIT Test that I have been working with for over 10 years now, tests for Candida in the added Gut Barrier Panel, plus Yeast Sensitivities (Bakers and Brewer’s Yeast).
I have been following Dr. William Crook’s advice on “The Yeast Connection”. For me, he has been the Father of this topic, updating his newest findings regularly in his books. I have also created a handout out of his books for my clients to use in case they test positive for Candida or Yeast Sensitivities.

Candida is a condition involving fungal overgrowth.
- Candida refers to a yeast, commonly Candida albicans, that naturally resides in the mouth, intestines, and skin. It becomes problematic when it overgrows, leading to conditions like oral thrush or candidiasis.
- SIFO occurs when fungi, often Candida species, overgrow specifically in the small intestine. This can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, gas, and abdominal pain. Unlike general candida overgrowth, SIFO is localized to the small intestine.
Here is a great description of our gut and what we might experience dealing with Candida from Dr. Mark Hyman:
Our entire intestinal tract is a single layer of cells that sit very close to one another. So that means there’s just a one-cell-thick barrier between you and the contents of your gut. On the one side, there’s food in various stages of digestion, and on the other, is your bloodstream, your immune system, and everything else.
And they must stay separate.
The food you eat should be properly broken down in your gut into its basic components—fatty acids, amino acids, simple sugars, vitamins, and minerals. Once these get absorbed by your intestinal cells and get “filtered” to the other side, your body can use them as building blocks for health.
Ensuring these nutrients are effectively absorbed is just as crucial as consuming them. You could be eating the most nutritious diet in the world, but if your gut isn't healthy enough to properly break down and absorb those nutrients, you're missing out on the vital ingredients your body needs to function optimally.
Most cases of SIFO (Small Intestine Fungal Overgrowth) involve an overgrowth of Candida species (a type of yeast). While Candida is normal in small amounts in the mouth, skin, and intestines, problems arise when it multiplies excessively.
This fungal overgrowth also thrives in the small intestine, fermenting food and producing byproducts that lead to bloating, gas, and discomfort.
So if you frequently experience any of these gut-related symptoms (you may or may not be experiencing non-gut-related issues at the same time).
Gut-Related Symptoms:
- Bloating
- Gas
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Sugar/carbohydrate cravings
- Skin issues (e.g., rashes, acne)
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Chronic vaginal yeast infections or jock itch
- Oral thrush (a white coating on the tongue)
- Toenail fungus
Several factors can contribute to the development of these conditions:
- Poor diet: High sugar, refined carbohydrates, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol and many other processed foods can all feed harmful fungi, leading to overgrowth and inflammation of the intestinal lining.
- Stress: Chronic stress can weaken the immune system and disrupt gut motility, creating an environment conducive to fungal overgrowth.
- Medications: Prolonged use of antibiotics, can disrupt the balance of gut flora.

Here is my newest handout for an Anti-Candida Diet Plan (that I created with the information from Dr. William Crook: The Yeast Connection”).
Please print and keep it close.
Please note that fruit does not have to be avoided if you are sensitive to Yeast, but only if Candid shows up as a red flag in your Gut Barrier Panel!!!!
While the topic of fermented foods (healing or causing more discomfort) is a controversy and kept me from writing this newsletter, after researching and participating in a Microbiome Masterclass right now, the answer I find is:
Fermented foods can be reintroduced into the diet after healing from Candida overgrowth once the gut has been restored to a healthy balance. It's important to proceed gradually and carefully:
- Timing: Only reintroduce fermented foods after confirming that Candida symptoms have subsided, and gut health is restored.
- Approach: Start with small servings of fermented foods like sauerkraut, or kimchi and monitor your body's response. Yogurt might be supportive of getting your gut health back to balance. Probiotics are safer for healing, but yogurts (non-sugar from Coconut, Almonds, Cashews or Goats Milk) can be tried.
- Considerations: If fermented foods cause symptoms to reappear, it may be necessary to delay their reintroduction further.
Some people are prone to Candida for life!!
