May 2016 Newsletter
The Environmental Working Group identifies fruits and vegetables in the conventional, non-organic food supply that are most often contaminated with pesticide residues. The worst offenders are nicknamed the "Dirty Dozen." Their 2016 report was just released and features the following fruits and vegetables as the "Dirty Dozen Plus."

The "Plus" Crops

The "Plus" in the "Dirty Dozen Plus" reflects types of produce that didn't meet the traditional Dirty Dozen criteria yet were of special concern. While they may not have met traditional criteria to rank them in the top 12, the Environmental Working Group found that they were frequently found to contain residues of insecticides that are toxic to the human nervous system.

For the 2016 list, the "Plus" crops included:

Hot Peppers

Kale

Collard Greens
Leafy greens

The Clean 15

The EWG also released their list of fruits and vegetables containing the least amount of pesticide residues:

Avocados

Sweet corn

Pineapple

Cabbage

Sweet peas (frozen)

Onions

Asparagus

Mangoes

Papayas

Kiwi

Eggplant

Honeydew melon

Grapefruit

Cantaloupe

Cauliflower
