March 2018 Newsletter
While I was hearing, communicating with and watching the news of people being exposed to a forceful storm with floods and power outages, I have decided to take a rather large task on, trying to summarize the newest nutrition research and developments, as I just learned at a conference in New York.
Please know that I am not making any claims; I am just repeating the proceedings of the Annual Integrative Healthcare Symposium 2018 from the leaders in the field of Functional Medicine and Integrative Nutrition and trying to make these discussions available for those interested.
I have been part of a group called Integrative Practitioners for five years, which offers me the opportunity to receive invitations to many webinars and lectures, and to attend the conference I just described. During about 40+ hours of learning each year, I have seen more focus on the area of food as medicine. I listen and learn from medical doctors, scientists, and philosophers, who have become my trusted sources of the newest information. This year the concentration on nutritional research or shared practical yearlong experiences was fascinating, because the interest in nutritional science is evolving and shifting into one of the main aspects of disease prevention.
As research studies are very hard to do in nutritional science due to the lack of funding or the implication of not being able to isolate a group for a period of time, I have decided to start sharing bits and pieces of the discussed topics and shared opinions, when they are made available to me.

The Newest Nutrition Research and Developments from the Leaders in Functional Medicine and Integrative Nutrition

The Toxin Solution
Every year, a leader in nutritional science receives an award, which this year went to Joseph Pizzorno, ND, and his work on Environmental Toxins and Neurodegeneration. Please check out his book: The Toxin Solution: How Hidden Poisons in the Air, Water, Food, and Products We Use Are Destroying Our Health--AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO FIX IT. As we are all constantly exposed to all kinds of toxins that our modern lifestyle brings, sweating regularly through workouts or a different kind of sauna will help us to detoxify. Dr. Pizzorno's summarized advice and takeaway from his lecture was to stay away from plastic containers and eat as many organic foods as possible to reduce the toxic load.

Grain Brain
The highlights for me were all diet-and nutrition-related topics. It started with a discussion if there is "one best" diet for humans. The experts were Dr. David Perlmutter (neurologist, author of the , as well as several researchers like Dominic D'Agostino, Ph.D. Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers), who is currently researching the Ketogenic Diet.
The Ketogenic Diet was repeatedly discussed during several conference days. The original Ketogenic Diet consists of 75 % fat, 20 % protein and 5 % carbohydrates, so 3-4g of fat for 1 gram of carbohydrates and protein. This "classic" Ketogenic Diet has helped many children with epilepsy. It is prescribed by a physician and carefully monitored. Many discussions revolved around a modified ketogenic diet. Where the exact ratios are seems to vary. The ketogenic diet is not advised for anybody with an impaired liver or pancreas. As with all drastic approaches of eating, it needs to be discussed with your primary care physician.

Ketogenic Diet
Dominic D'Agostino has a website: www.ketonutrition.org, with further information. He works with military staff going into combat for special missions to increase brain clarity and reactivity. He is also involved in discussions and research with NASA to provide the best nutritional advice to astronauts. Intermittent fasting was discussed during this panel. Eating between a time window of 6-8 hours every day, for example, starting at 10 AM with the first meal and finishing with the last food intake between 4 and 6 PM has shown many benefits for weight loss, energy, and brain clarity.

Vegan Diet
John Lewis, Ph.D., eats a vegan diet and was interesting to listen to, as he only eats plant foods, while researching nutrition and competing as a bodybuilder. He drinks many natural green fresh vegetable smoothies, without any protein supplementation added.

The best diet for humans that the whole panel was able to agree on is a diet
that does not elevate blood sugar levels.

Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?
Dr. Mark Hyman, Director of the Cleveland Clinic, presented on the topic of his new book: Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?.
Because of the huge amount of information, please buy his book. For me as a holistic nutrition practitioner, I make mental checks and compare my beliefs with Dr. Hyman's, which is reassuring! Actually, this is why I attend these large conferences, to compare, question, and revise the advice that I give to my clients. There is so much new research out there ... Luckily, I have studied with very critical thinking, innovative and diversified programs, where many well-known contributors like Dr. Russel Blaylock and Dr. Daniel Amen who are still at the forefront of integrating nutrition and lifestyle were discussed in depth which created a foundation and understanding about healthy living.
So here are Dr. Hyman's basic principles: Eat real foods! Quality over quantity! Only eat food made by God, not men! An alkaline diet is very beneficial.
Avoid processed foods, refined sugars, carbohydrates, and refined oils.
Avoid factory-farmed animals.
Avoid additives, artificial ingredients, hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, and GMOs.
His basic principles are to eat:
Whole real foods, mostly plants.
Low-glycemic-load diet.
Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, seeds, fish).
Sustainably and humanely raised or harvested animal foods (fish, poultry, meat, etc.)
Areas of controversy that were discussed during his lecture:
Saturated fats
Meat and animal proteins vs. vegetable protein (chicken, fish, eggs)
Grains and beans
Dairy
Please know that I love to discuss these topics! If you would like to talk about his book and share your opinions, please make your first 30-minute complimentary appointment with me.

The Healing Self
Dr. Deepak Chopra talked about the future of wellbeing. His lecture is hard to describe, and it left all his listeners in a kind of awe and haze. With his integrative mind/body/soul deep understanding of health and wellbeing, he added a different dimension to all discussions. Please read The Healing Self: A Revolutionary New Plan to Supercharge Your Immunity and Stay Well for Life by Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Rudolph Tanzi. Dr. Tanzi is the Professor of Neurology at Harvard University and Director of Genetics and Aging Research at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Chopra's understanding of the power of nutrition is that you can change health with nutrition in a week.
Dr. Chopra has developed "The Breathing APP," which he claims is anti-Inflammatory by concentrating on love, compassion, gratitude, and empathy. It is free. Please try!

Aging is Not a Disease
Dr. Jeffrey Bland, who calls himself the "Grandfather of Functional Medicine," said in his lecture "Aging Is Not a Disease" that there is a life expectancy for every organism. He defined aging as a measurement of function.

Leveraging Lifestyle for Brain Health
Dr. David Perlmutter, the last speaker of the conference, talked about Leveraging Lifestyle for Brain Health.
His presentation showed that:
70% of our gene expression can be influenced by diet!
The bigger the belly, the higher the risk for dementia.
Various studies showed that:
Cardio workouts lower the risk for Alzheimer's/dementia, even if a person is genetically predisposed.
Aerobic exercise grows the brain.
Aerobic exercise shows a 50% reduction of Alzheimer's risk.
I loved his statement: "You can't exercise away a crappy diet!!"
Dr Perlmutter had two large takeaways from his impressive lecture:
It might not matter if we eat a low-carb or low-fat diet with high-quality real food sources.
Food is easy to have an influence on, so make the BEST CHOICES!
Dr. Perlmutter asked all of us (1000 attendees) to get people to change their lifestyle and be advocates for healthy eating. I guess this is part of why I want to share the most powerful messages of possibly my favorite week of the year!

FIT TEST
Dr. Susan Blum talked about the FIT Test from KBMO Diagnostics in her lecture as her best choice to test food sensitivities.
Inflammation is a word that is used in the description of any topic: as the foundation of chronic illness, how it affects immunity, and mental and emotional wellbeing.
Please talk to me about the different FIT Tests that are available through a partnership with KBMO Diagnostics in my business. I will review the test results with you and lead you to a healthy meal plan with the resulting information.

Hopefully all this information and book references are helpful to you!

Please contact me after March 27, 2018 for another appointment. I will be in Germany checking in with my family and will get back to all your e-mails and phone calls when I return.
